Building a customer support team in Egypt
Support is usually the first function a company puts into an Egyptian team, because the market is mature enough that you are not the first one working it out. This is how the team gets built, what it covers, what it costs, and where Egypt genuinely fits.
First, decide which kind of team you are building
Almost every conversation about support in Egypt collapses two different products into one word. The first is volume. Egypt's contact centre industry is licensed and accredited, and its scale is real: the wider IT and business process sector employs an estimated 212,000 people, roughly 95,000 of them in customer care roles, across more than 200 international firms (Outsource Accelerator). Telecom Egypt's Xceed alone runs more than 5,000 employees across over 24 languages.
If you need three hundred seats answering a forecastable queue, those operators are built for it and we would rather say so than compete for the work. Atlas is not a call centre and has no interest in being measured like one.
The second product is a small senior team: five people who handle your most complex customers, your technical escalations, your named accounts. That team lives or dies on who the individuals are, which is the part a seat based model cannot price. That is the team we build.
We wrote up the wider market, including who the licensed operators are and what each is good at, in our guide to the Egyptian support market.
How the team gets built
Six steps, and we carry all six. The parts companies usually underestimate are the first and the last.
Scope the roles before the headcount
We start from what your customers actually contact you about, in which languages, and at what hours. That determines the shape of the team, which is usually not the shape a headcount number suggests. Two senior agents who close a case outright cost less over a year than four who escalate everything.
Source against that scope, not against a CV pile
Our network is built on internationally educated Egyptian professionals, many of whom studied in Europe and came back. For support roles that means people who have sat on the customer side of a European or Gulf company before, not people learning your market from a script.
Vet for communication first
Language, tone and written clarity are assessed before anyone reaches you, because they are the part of a support hire you cannot coach quickly. Technical familiarity with your product is coachable. How someone writes to an angry customer at 5pm is largely not.
We employ them, you direct them
Atlas holds the employment contract, runs payroll, files the statutory contributions and carries compliance with Egyptian labour law. You do not need a legal entity in Egypt. Day to day the team takes direction from you and works in your tools.
Onboard into your stack, not a parallel one
Your helpdesk, your CRM, your macros, your escalation ladder. A support team that works in a vendor's system and syncs to yours creates a second source of truth and a reporting argument six months later.
Stay accountable after go live
Retention at the agent level is where support quality quietly erodes. We manage it as part of the engagement rather than treating a resignation as your problem to re-brief. Every placement carries a 30 day replacement window, and we carry the cost of using it.
The roles a support team needs
A first build is usually three to six people. The mix matters more than the number.
- First line support
- Email, chat and ticket queues in English, Arabic, German or French. The volume layer, staffed by people who can resolve rather than route.
- Technical support
- Product specialists who can read a log, reproduce a bug and write a defect report your engineers will accept without a follow up call.
- Customer success and retention
- Named owners for accounts that need a relationship rather than a queue. Onboarding, check ins, renewals and expansion conversations.
- Team leads and quality assurance
- The layer most first builds skip. Someone reviewing tickets against a rubric and coaching against it is what keeps quarter three as good as quarter one.
On languages: English and Arabic are the baseline, and Egypt's German and French school and university system means fluent speakers of both are reachable in Cairo rather than theoretical. We set out where that talent actually comes from in our piece on multilingual Egyptian talent.
What it costs, itemised
We will not publish a price per agent, because a number without a role attached to it is marketing. What we can publish is the structure, which is the part quotes usually hide.
- Base salary
- Set by the role and the seniority, not by a blended agent rate. A technical support specialist and a first line agent are different hires and should never carry the same number.
- Statutory employer contributions, about 22 percent
- Employer social insurance runs at 18.75 percent of insurable salary (PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries), with employer health insurance adding a further 3.25 percent (Fragomen, 2025). Both apply to a capped insurable wage, EGP 14,500 a month as of 2025, not to the full salary. Any quote that applies a flat percentage to gross pay is overstating this line.
- Our management fee
- Quoted separately and in writing, covering recruitment, employment, payroll, compliance, and the ongoing management of the team. You should be able to see it as its own line rather than buried in a per agent rate.
The full build up, including a worked example and where the commonly quoted 40 to 60 percent saving comes from, is in the real cost of building a team in Egypt. If you are weighing this against opening your own entity, that comparison is here.
Questions we get before the first call
If yours is not here, ask it directly. We answer these in writing before anyone signs anything.
